Malbec
Malbec is a French varietal, also known as Cot or Auxerrois, typically found in the appellation of Cahors, but it is also used in Bordeaux.
Introduced in Argentina around the mid 19th century by the French agronomist Michel Pouget, it immediately won for itself a remarkable popularity, covering at its peak an area of 50,000 hectares.
The varietal is very delicate, needing specific climatic conditions in order to express its complete potential.
The singular micro climatic and macro climatic conditions of the Mendoza area and its soils, combined with the traditional viticultural practices - such as flood irrigation - have allowed the vine here to survive phylloxera, and to continue the practice of planting free of root stock.
The end result of the Malbec varietal in Argentina is very different from its French namesake: the salient characteristics are an intense purple-violet color and extremely soft, sweet and enveloping tannins.
The descriptors most often employed define its bouquet are: wild cherry, red berries, anise, and tropical spices, as nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon. Notwithstanding the extraordinary charm it manifests when it is young, in its most concentrated examples it is obviously qualified for aging.
